CEO Corner: Perseverance in the Face of Challenge

Over the last year, our work at Hearth has made a real and measurable impact. But as we look ahead, the urgency of our mission has never been clearer. Homelessness is rising, and older adults are among those most disproportionately affected.

HUD released its most recent Point-in-Time (PIT) count that revealed homelessness in the United States reached an all-time high last year. According to an analysis conducted by the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) of 2024, data from HUD reports more than 104,000 people aged 55-64 and 42,150 people over age 64 were counted as homeless. Nearly half of these individuals were unsheltered.

The HUD report further states many older adults are experiencing homelessness for the first time, driven by fixed incomes, rising rents, and the lack of age-affordable housing. This is not news to Hearth. Our prevention case managers work with clients every day struggling financially to stay housed. At the same time, critical funding is at risk, forcing Hearth to find new and creative ways to bridge the gap and continue our work.

Yet, if there is one thing that defines this organization, it is our determination. Our commitment to never giving up was on full display during the Winter Walk. As a first-time partner organization, we didn’t just participate—we became one of the top fundraisers. That achievement wasn’t just about numbers; it was a testament to the grit, passion, and relentless dedication of this community.

Now, as we navigate an uncertain future, we must harness that same perseverance. We need new approaches, new partnerships, and new voices to ensure that every older adult has a place to call home.

I invite you to join us at our Annual Meeting—a chance to hear firsthand about our impact and the road ahead. You’ll also hear Lisa’s story, a powerful reminder of why our work matters and why we must keep pushing forward.

Together, we will never give up the fight.
