Hearth Housing

Our organization provides Permanent Supportive Housing and Assisted Living that offers specialized services to assist older adults in maintaining their health, stability, and independence.

Permanent Supportive Housing:

Permanent Supportive Housing is a targeted intervention designed for people who, without supportive services, would not be able to stay housed and who, without stable housing, would not be able to benefit from services. This approach is not simply affordable housing with added programs; rather, it combines permanent, affordable, and independent housing with comprehensive, flexible, and voluntary supports that are centered on residents’ needs and provided where they live.

Each of our supportive housing sites is staffed by an interdisciplinary team that includes licensed nurses, social workers, mental health clinicians, and housing program managers. Every resident is offered a comprehensive medical, behavioral, and social assessment every six months to identify evolving needs and establish individualized goals. Residents can choose from a variety of voluntary activities that reduce isolation, support physical and mental wellness, and strengthen their sense of community. For newly housed residents, we provide essential household items such as a chair or recliner, bed, dresser, nightstand, and a small kitchen table with two chairs. It costs approximately $4,000 to furnish each unit so that residents can begin their new lives with comfort and dignity.

Assisted Living:

As the only deeply affordable assisted living facility in Massachusetts, Ruggles fills a gap that no other provider addresses. Without Ruggles, our residents would not be able to afford, or access, assisted living services elsewhere.

Ruggles is an age-restricted community located in the heart of Nubian Square, designed to provide stability, dignity, and care for low-income and formerly homeless older adults. Each unit includes a kitchenette, private bath, and access to welcoming common areas such as a dining room, living room with a piano, activity space with a full kitchen, and a sunroom overlooking a shared patio and garden.

Ruggles Assisted Living serves older adults aged 55 and above who require assistance with essential self-care tasks to maintain their well-being and independence. Key activities of daily living (ADLs), include bathing, dressing, mobility, toileting, and meal preparation.  Eligible residents will qualify for a housing subsidy (such as Section 8, SSI-G, or Shelter Plus Care) and a service subsidy (such as Group Adult Foster Care, PACE,  or a Senior Care Option (SCO)). Priority is given to applicants who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, ensuring that those most in need have access to safe, stable, and supportive housing.
