Finding Home: Walter’s Story

Walter is a man with an infectious, fun-loving energy. He brings a spirit to our community unlike any other, full of life and ready to engage with everyone around him. A deeply thoughtful person, Walter has navigated incredible challenges with quiet strength and profound reflection.
Before Hearth, Walter’s life was in constant motion. The harsh realities of homelessness were no stranger. He describes this time in his life with candid simplicity: “I was homeless in the streets, you know, going from couch to couch.”
The day Walter moved into his own apartment at one of Hearth’s properties was a significant turning point. The stability brought an overwhelming sense of peace. Small benefits, like being able to use his own bathroom, became significant, signaling a newfound sense of security and autonomy. With a place to call home, Walter has discovered the joy of sitting outside and going for walks on nice days. “I can go outside, get some fresh air. There was a time where I couldn’t do that, because I was homeless,” he says, explaining that before, he lacked the safety and stability to simply relax outdoors. With Hearth, Walter can always return home.
Today, Walter is a vibrant member of his community. He speaks warmly of the staff and the camaraderie he shares with his fellow residents. He participates in community events like Hearth’s resident art classes, bringing his signature enthusiasm and creating connections that combat the isolation he once knew.
Walter’s story highlights a critical issue in our city: too many older adults are growing old without a place to call home. His journey from the streets to a stable home demonstrates the transformative power of having a safe and supportive place to live. Walter echoes the importance of Hearth’s work: “Everybody’s got to get old… and everyone needs a little help.”
Our mission is to provide and advocate for permanent, affordable, and supportive housing for older adults who have experienced homelessness. Walter’s resilience, and vibrant spirit are why we do what we do. Through our work, individuals like Walter are not just finding shelter; they are finding a place to call home, a place to rebuild their lives, and a community that welcomes them with open arms.
