Volunteers play an important role at Hearth, become a volunteer today!

Hearth is excited to announce we have resumed in-person volunteer activities!

Keeping safety first, we have placed the follow precautions in place. If you are unwilling / unable to do any of these, please ask about our virtual volunteering opportunities. Updated: April 2022

  • The largest amount of volunteers for one activity in one location is limited to 5 people. This includes school groups, work groups, community groups, families, etc.

  • All in-person volunteers must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19, including the booster shoot when eligible. Exemptions may be given for medical or religious reasons.

  • All volunteers must wear masks covering the nose and mouth while inside the buildings.

  • Volunteer activities involving eating / serving meals is suspended until further notice. Individually packaged treats can be provided, but not consumed during the activity.

Volunteers make a huge difference in improving the everyday health and happiness of our residents. Whether they're serving Thanksgiving dinner at Olmsted Green, raking leaves at the Elsie Frank House, or playing Bingo at Ruggles Assisted Living, that smiling face and companionship can change someone’s whole day for the better. We have a wide variety of opportunities available, both direct contact with elders and administrative tasks that keep Hearth growing.

For more information on our updated volunteer opportunities, please contact Martha Temesghen , Human Resource Associate through email mtemesghen@hearth-home.org , or call 617-986-3412.

Specific volunteer needs:

There are many more needs in addition to these. The most urgent need is a dedicated grocery shopper.

  • ABOUT: Pick up groceries for our congregate living facilities. The person will need to first pick up a credit card in Jamaica Plain then drive to Costco and back to Jamaica Plain to drop off groceries.

  • LOCATION: Hearth at Burroughs Street, 27 Burroughs Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130

  • TIME COMMITMENT: The ideal volunteer will commit to a regular weekly schedule for a long period of time/for the foreseeable future. This is an on-going weekly need.

  • NEEDS: Please keep in mind you will need plenty of room in your car as the order is fairly large. Available for volunteers 18+ only.

BINGO:

  • ABOUT: Bingo is their favorite activity! We will have supplies for the game (bingo cards, markers, etc.), but need you to supply around 10 - 20 prizes.

  • LOCATION: All locations available!

  • TIME COMMITMENT: Generally Bingo lasts for around an hour. You can be a regular Bingo caller or just a one time activity. You will need extra time for setup and cleanup.

  • SCHEDULE: Flexible, afternoons. Weekends a possibility.

  • NEEDS: When volunteering to play bingo you will need to bring in prizes for residents. Bingo prizes can be a wide variety of items (visit a Dollar Tree for some great deals) things like personal care items, themed holiday items, and home essentials are always a big hit.

COMPANIONSHIP / GAMES / ACTIVITIES:

  • ABOUT: We have missed our volunteers so any sort of games or just general companionship is welcome. You could do a walk through the park, play games, perform your talent, or do arts and crafts. The possibilities are endless!

  • LOCATION: All locations available!

  • TIME COMMITMENT: One time or regularly. Do the same activity or change it up!

  • SCHEDULE: Flexible, afternoons generally. Weekends a possibility.

  • NEEDS: For activities such as arts and crafts, you will need to provide supplies that we do not have on-hand. Check out our Amazon List for inspiration and to easily send supplies for an activity. Games that we do not have available would need to be provided.
